1. Introduction Eindhoven is not a very old city. But it has a warm country hart in the middle, with 200.000 houses it is the 5th largest city in the Netherlands. Southeast Brabant has changed fast from an agricultural area to an industrial region with technology in a leading role. That’s something you can see by the factories of the twenties and thirties who are terraced alongside modern office buildings. But the City of Light – with a wink to the old Philips light bulb factory – which is very important to the city isn’t looks like sobriety it is. The city centre is easy and lively. It’s comfortable living in Eindhoven. The great facilities the houses are spread so you can have your own space. Eindhoven is immediately surrounded by bushes, trees and heath fields.
2. The History of Eindhoven Eindhoven became a city in 1232. The little town was destroyed several times. In the Middle Ages the city stayed small until the second half of the 19th century. In 1874 Woensel and Tongelre became a part of Eindhoven. In 1891 Philips started the lightbulb industry in Eindhoven. This change meant a lot for the city. In 1920 the towns Woensel, Strijp, Gestel, Stratum and Tongelre became “Groot Eindhoven”. In 1942, 1943 and 1944 the city had a lot of damage by bombs. After World War II the completely destroyed centre of the city was built up again. Big buildings came which were all completely modern. Almost all of the old beautiful buildings were destroyed. This is why there are a lot of fairly new buildings in Eindhoven. The station, the Diaconessenhuis, which is a hospital and the headquarters of Philips are all fairly new buildings. Eindhoven is now one of the most modern big industry cities in the Netherlands. 3. Art The ‘van Abbe museum’ enjoys world fame in the field of modern art. The 2 faces of Eindhoven the business and the Brabant side are evident in the Daf and the Kempenland museums. The Frits Philips music centre home of the Brabant Orchestra, the city theatre film and theatre house Plaza Futura and many smaller stages like galleries and movie houses ensure a wide suply of culture. Eindhoven has also an open air museum the ‘prehistorisch dorp’. It’s a project you can call it expirimental argeology. You have a good sight at how people survived in the prehistory. If you like you can go on a prehistorical canoe trip. Everything you would like to know about the prehistory you can see there. If you want to know everything about the Kempen mere then thousands years ago, then you have to go to the Museum Kempenland. Art you can see in the ‘centrum voor de kunsten’.
